Feeling tired, getting headaches, craving snacks all day, or struggling through your workouts?
You might think you need more sleep, a better diet, or another supplement.
But what if the answer is much simpler?
One thing I see all the time with clients is people walking around dehydrated without even realizing it.
When most people think about hydration, they think:
"I just need to drink more water."
But staying hydrated is about more than carrying around a giant water bottle all day.
Especially during summer, workouts, travel, or busy schedules, dehydration can sneak up on you and affect how you feel, move, and perform.
Here are some simple hydration tips that many people overlook.
Start early
Want an easy way to improve your energy before 9 AM?
Start drinking water earlier in the day.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting until they're already thirsty.
Why drink water first thing in the morning?
While you sleep, your body is still working hard recovering muscles, regulating temperature, breathing, and filtering waste. Since you go several hours without drinking anything, you naturally wake up a little dehydrated. Starting your day with a glass of water is an easy way to help your body feel more energized and ready for the day ahead.
2. Sip, Don't Chug
Ever feel like all the water you drink goes straight through you?
That's because it is! Many people wait until they're thirsty and then try to drink a huge amount all at once.
Instead, focus on sipping throughout the day. Small amounts consistently can help your body stay hydrated much more effectively than trying to play catch-up.
3. Eat Your Water
Hydration doesn't just come from your water bottle.
Some foods are packed with water and can help you stay hydrated throughout the day.
Some of my favorites include:
Watermelon
Cucumbers
Strawberries
Oranges
Lettuce
Celery
It's one of the easiest ways to support hydration without even thinking about it.
Nothing like hydrating with a nice snackie!
4. Electrolytes
Whether you're working out, hiking, playing sports, doing yard work, or spending time outside, you're losing more than just water.
Electrolytes can help replace what your body loses through sweat and help support proper hydration. Also, support muscle function, and keep your nerves working properly.
Electrolytes are very important, but can also be abused.
Using electrolyte supplements too often can lead to consuming more sodium and other minerals than your body needs. Too much can cause bloating, water retention, stomach discomfort, and may even contribute to higher blood pressure in some individuals.
So if you have sweated a lot from working out, being outside in the heat, played sports, etc., feel free to have a packed of electrolytes.
5. easiest hydration test in the world!
Check your urine color.
Light yellow usually means you're hydrated.
Dark yellow usually means it's time to drink more fluids. Remember to sip all day, chugging 3 glasses of water is not going to help.
Not glamorous, but it works.
6. Coffee and alcohol
Don’t worry, you don’t have to give it up!
Coffee is completely fine for most people, but if you're drinking caffeine all day and forgetting water, your body may notice.
The same goes for alcohol, especially during hot summer months. If you don’t want to feel as shitty the next day, drink water as well.
There is a simple trick! Match your coffee or alcoholic beverage with extra water throughout the day.
Lets make it easy!
Making sure you are hydrating can feel like an annoying chore and you won't stick with it.
Lets make it easier by:
Carrying a water bottle
Adding fruit to your water
Using electrolytes when needed
Drinking water with meals
Setting reminders on your phone
Small habits really do make a big difference.
the bottom line
The bottom line is that staying hydrated can feel overwhelming. I am a huge believer in doing the little things that actually help, not using medication and doctors visits to mask issues on something that is truly simple. Hydration affects your energy, recovery, workouts, focus, and overall health more than most people realize. Sometimes feeling better doesn't require a complicated plan. Let’s work together in making our bodies feel the best they can, we only have one so we mind as well take care of it!
